History

A local benefactor Robert Washington Dana gifted the land for the Institute to the parish, and we understand that construction started in 1918 and the building was completed in 1920. It was constructed of locally quarried blue Elvin under a slate roof.

The use of the building under its constitution was for the use of the inhabitants of the parish of St Minver Lowlands without distinction of political, religious or other opinions including the use for meetings, lectures and classes, and for other forms of recreation and leisure/time occupation. The object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.

In May 1981 the building was transferred to the Charity Commission, and continued to have the same aims, it was interesting to see at that time the representative members included the Rock Bingo Group, Rock Methodist Church Council, Rock Whist Drive Group, St Minver Garden Society, St Minver Girl Guides and Brownies Association, St Minver Lowlands Parish Council, St Minver Parochial Church Council, and Polzeath Women's Institute.

As time went on situations changed and the number of those representatives have diminished but we are pleased to say that the Polzeath Women's Institute and the Garden Society still use the hall. A number of the other groups now have their own premises.

Over the years the Institute has benefited from a strong chairman and committee and substantial work has taken place both to the fabric of the building and its use. In the last few years the building has been re-roofed and slate hung and all windows replaced, it has had the addition of a kitchen area; new toilets and a meeting room and is currently in good repair. It also benefits from a large tarmac car park. It is used in the summer season as an exhibition hall for local artists displaying paintings and ceramics.
